For small shops or business owners, having few thousand products without much technical expertise, Prestashop is definitely a better option, since it can run on lower hardware stack and does not need lot of technical expertise. Prestashop has almost all features you will need for product, customer and order management. When your business grows, you can always migrate to a different platform
However, if you have number of products exceeding few thousands and you can manage/have access to technical expertise, you should go for Magento since it offers comprehensive, robust and enterprise grade features. But definitely consider a good VPS solution for Magento. I personally like Vultr VPS since it offers exceptional performance for a very reasonable price(starting $2.5 for a 512 MB VPS).
There are also migration solutions available, which can help you migrate from one platform to the other later in case you change your mind.
